The warmth and comfort that a rug brings to a room are second to none. It uplifts and transforms a room, establishing a personality and bringing a sense of order to space. Like the famous designer, Frederico DiVante, said, “A room without a rug is a naked room.”
Each room in the house brings its own space and design, and the bedroom is no different. It’s the one room in the house that offers the most comfort and warmth, where you retire to at the end of a long tiring workday, and where you begin each day with a fresh and clear mind. For these reasons, it is essential that you are able to find these elements of peace and relaxation when you open that bedroom door.
A rug can offer all this and more, not only the comfort but the aesthetics as well. But every bedroom is different and each has its own space and size. Hence, finding the best place for your rug can sometimes be challenging. A point to note is that there is no right or wrong answer to this. What may work for one space might not work for another but that’s the exciting aspect of it: versatility!
Just a little reminder that all these sizes are recommended and these will always vary depending on the size of the room and surrounding furniture. We always advise measuring your preferable rug size first, you can use some scotch tape to do this. Then enter them in our customization tool and we can make your bespoke rug to those exact specifications!
Wall to wall
A wall to wall rug can solve all your problems as this covers the entire area. No matter the size of your bed or any surrounding furniture, this will suffice for all. Some even opt to have additional rugs placed on top for aesthetics and to increase comfort.
Framing the bed
One of the more popular positions to place your rug, this can vary with the size of the bed and the surrounding furniture. Generally, the bed is positioned centrally against one wall of the bedroom. The rug should run along the sides and length of the bed, with enough space to land with your feet comfortably.
With framing the bed, you can always play around with the position, either placing it horizontally covering the bottom half of the bed with more floor coverage on the sides, or place it vertically, covering more of the frame of the bed with still enough space on the sides of the bed.
Rug sizes for King Size beds
For the standard king size beds, there are various options that work best. With the large king size bed, it may take up a lot of space but with the right sized rug, it’ll work.
8ft x 10ft
An 8x10 rug will work just fine with enough space at the end to comfortably walk around the bed without placing your feet on the cold wooden floor. This size works best for those who have a smaller master bedroom and not as much space to maneuver around with the large king size bed.
9ft x 12 ft
Even though your bed is the centrepiece, a 9x12 area rug will cover everything and bring it all together. Also with the larger rug space the design is more visible on your rug. It can extend past the nightstand and any ottoman or stool you might have at the foot of the bed. Just remember to keep at least a 6-8 inches gap away from the wall to avoid it looking like a wall to wall rug.
Rug sizes for Queen Size beds
Queen beds, despite having smaller frames, also have a few options for the rug size. Again it depends on the size of the room and the surrounding furniture but here is what we think works best.
6ft x 9ft
A 6x9 rug will always look classy as this will fit perfectly in proportion to the queen size bed. However this will not allow you to include any nightstands on the rug, although there is enough walking space with at least 14 inches available either side.
8ft x 10ft
With this size rug, there is plenty of space around the bed, at least 2 feet on both sides to see the design and have enough cushion underfoot for the comfort factor.
Runners
One of the best ways to accent your bedroom is with a set of runners. Regardless of the size of the bed, two runners running alongside either side of the bed and even one horizontally at the foot of the bed. This ensures the walking space around the frame is covered and there is still enough floor space visible within the room.
Runners work extremely well with two single beds. It could be placed in the middle of the two beds or on the far sides. They can also be added on wall to wall rugs for a cozier base.
Different shapes
Although rectangle-shaped rugs are one of the more popular shapes, there are multiple shapes to choose from. A circle rug framing the bottom half of the bed works extremely well, or even a half-moon shape at the foot. Oblong and arch shapes framing the bed also work wonders.
There are 15 shapes to choose from and you can see them all in real-time with our easy-to-use customization tool.
All in all, these are the various recommendations we have. Remember, all our rugs can be customized to any size, shape, colour and material.
